FINISH HIM!

A few more Crooked Dice martial artists finished this week. We have a very humid week ahead of us, so I might not be at my painting bench too much - even in the basement, just sitting there painting, I start getting sweaty and there's no place I can conveniently plug a fan in to keep the air circulating.

First up, two copies of "End Level Boss A," painted as the characters Scorpion and Sub-Zero from the "Mortal Kombat" video game and expanded media franchise. Both characters used the same model, just palette-swapped, in the original video game, hence using two copies of the same figure! Scorpion is depicted with pupilless white eyes in most media as a nod to him being undead, and I copied that on to my paint job here.

I also finished "Street Fighter A," which I painted as the villainous Chong Li (played by Bolo Yeung) who went up against Van Damme in 1988's BLOODSPORT.

These will eventually see action on the table in future games of "A Fistful of Kung Fu."

In other news, my picking up entirely too many plastic zombies from my friend Dave has been delayed by his attending Gen-Con and coming home to find his dryer had given up the ghost, so I'm still in the green! I did pick up a couple of vintage "Clan Wars" samurai figures cheap at one of my local game stores who are still clearing out stock from a previous owner. I was looking at the Reaper paint rack and I think some of those colors were discontinued before I reentered the hobby in 2014...

Pop Culture Heroes

A few more finished figures today, all of them more heroic types based on pop culture from the 1980s and 1990s. Let's run them down from best-recognizable to least, shall we?

First up is "Action Hero B" from Crooked Dice, pretty immediately recognizable as David Hasselhoff in the role of Michael Knight on the TV show Knight Rider. I've never watched the show myself (though I'm generally a fan of the Hoff), so I had to pull up some screenshots for outfit colors.

Next up, the Muscles from Brussels - a street fighter from a line that Crooked Dice absorbed, which is pretty clearly intended to look like Jean Claude Van Damme. I based the outfit on the one he wears during the dance scene in 1989's KICKBOXER.

Next, Van Damme returns - this figure, from the same pack as the previous, had a similar look and cut to his outfit as the figure above, so I went for a very different color scheme. Now, we've got Van Damme as Colonel Guile from the 1994 STREET FIGHTER movie. I saw this one in theaters as a kid (which is weird because I was 7 and wasn't a video game player - maybe Dad just wanted to see a Van Damme movie and I was his excuse?) but didn't remember much about it. Watched it last year when the new movie was announced and had a lot of fun with how corny it is.

One thing that caught my eye when looking at reference photos for this was that his American flag tattoos are "backwards" from the way they should be facing, which I dutifully recreated here.

Finally, a Ninja from Reaper's "Chronoscope" line that's been in my project box for years. I opted to paint him as caucasian and wearing a white ninja outfit - thus making him Cole (Franco Nero's character) from the 1981 film ENTER THE NINJA. I might get a second copy and paint him in traditional black with a red belt, to represent Michael Dudikoff's character from the film AMERICAN NINJA.

So what's the plan for these? Well, I do want to get back to Fistful of Kung Fu one of these days and have actual martial artist miniatures on the table for it. Plus, my local gaming convention Running GAGG has a "Pirates vs. Ninjas" theme announced for next year's show, and I think it'd be fun to put on a demo game there and call my event "Oops, Too Many Ninjas" or something like that.

Devils on Parade

I'm prefacing this post with a warning - some of these figures are not just nude, but downright lewd. That's not normally my thing, but I've had them (I think I might have originally bought them to paint up for a friend I ultimately had a falling out with), I started working on them while washes were drying on the last bunch of zombies, and here we are.

Let's start with the most Safe-For-Work one; this is the "Basement Beast" from Crooked Dice, and as impressed as I generally am with Crooked Dice's commitment to pop culture delving, I never in a million years would have guessed they would make a figure of the titular monster from the movie CELLAR DWELLER. The sculptor really captured John Carl Buechler's monster design from the film; rather than following the color scheme of the movie, I painted it with bright, almost cartoonishly red skin.

The recipe for the skin color (since I know I'll want to do it again on future figures) is a base coat of Vallejo Game Color "Gory Red," washed with GW "Carroburg Crimson," then highlighted with Reaper "Fire Red" and a final highlight of Reaper "Regulator's Scarlet."

Next up are a pair of "Saucy Succubi" from Heresy Miniatures; they originally came in a three-pack but their sister managed to get dropped, break, and the pieces disappear instantly into the 8th dimension.

And now the really risque ones - these are a pack of Succubi from Hasslefree Miniatures, who sadly have stopped trading; I'm hopeful that the molds can get sold on to another manufacturer at the very least, as there's a number of figures in their "Modern Adventurers" range I missed out on and would like the chance to acquire.

So what's the plan for this bunch? I'm not 100% sure to be honest. I am giving another look towards Osprey's "When Nightmares Come" solo investigative horror wargame and and thinking about giving that a go, and this would give me a nice chunk of enemies towards a storyline fighting the "Damned" villain faction.

And! They push me back into the green for a little bit on the tracker.

More Completed Modern Figures

I've completed another batch of figures, some of whom have been moldering in my leadpile for...a very long time, let's leave it at that. It's a good mix today, including a bunch that will likely prove useful for games like Zombie RV.

First up, a mix of Copplestone troopers. These are leftovers from "Female Troopers" and "Mercenaries" packs from the Future Wars range, mixed together and given a cohesive paint scheme. The armor might be a little bright, but it's not bad. Maybe they're an elite anti-zombie or anti-alien force?

The shirtless Ah-nuld clone had a pretty severe mold line running right down the middle of his face that was a doozy to try and fix.

Next up, some trailer park inhabitants; these are mostly from a Copplestone "Citizen Militia" pack, with the woman carrying a shotgun coming from a "Babes With Guns" pack. I'm pretty proud of the slogans I carefully lettered onto the T-shirts with a brush. Note also the guy with a Dale Earnhardt Sr. cap and a Marlboro jacket.

Finally, some miscellaneous; the woman in the silver boots and swimsuit is from the same Copplestone "Babes With Guns" pack as Miss Shotgun above, while the bald guy with the rifle is from Hasslefree Miniatures and has been sitting half-done on my desk for almost two years. I hadn't been happy with how his skin was looking and set him aside, but I got that issue resolved and finished him off.

The middle figure is from Crooked Dice, and is intended to look like Kelly LeBrock as she appeared in the movie "Weird Science." I went with different colors, painting her legs as bare instead of covered by leotards, producing a wild "swimsuit and tube top look." After I gave her red hair, I thought to myself, "redheads tend to be fair skinned and prone to sunburn, what if I painted a sunburn on her?" A red glaze later she was sunburned, and then I went, "what if I painted some tanlines on her to show areas that didn't get burned?"

I'm pretty amused/pleased with how it turned out.

So that's another 13 figures completed...but I got a pack of 28mm sheep in the mail today (the first scenario for Zombie RV calls for a couple), and I ordered some more cars from Miniature Tanks, so there's a couple lines on the tracker getting updated today.

Latest Figures Painted

As soon as I saw these "FBI Agents" from Crooked Dice, I knew I had to have them; X-Files scared the tar out of me as a sensitive kid in the 90s, but I've since become a fan of the "Monster of the Week" episodes (the overarching mythology episodes, not so much). Having Mulder and Scully on my table was a must for the demo games of "Perilous Tales" I'm hoping to run on February 1st at a localish gaming convention.

These are another two from Crooked Dice, though maybe less familiar; the armed cheerleader is a dead ringer for Kelli Maroney's character in the 1984 cult classic NIGHT OF THE COMET, while the teenage metalhead is just as clearly intended to be the character Eddie Munson from Netflix's "Stranger Things" series. I even freehanded the partial skull and crossbones on the bandanna he's wearing around his head.

Finally, I needed multiple rat swarms to represent the lowest grade of minion serving the master demon; these are 3D resin prints from GreenStuffWorld that I found on a spinner rack at Harlequin Hobbies. I like the little extras on these; the king rat directing his fellows, the wedge of cheese, the stack of newspapers. It gives each base personality. Each one is glued to a 25mm Renedra round base. Hopefully half a dozen will be enough for my demo games; I think the Perilous Tales rules actually have Rat Swarms appearing on the table two at a time.

And this brings me up to current; everything I've finished painting to date has been posted on both the AHPC blog and here.

Beginning a Dracula's America campaign

Tonight, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting up with a couple of local-ish guys to start a fresh campaign of Dracula's America - a supernatural western skirmish from Osprey, which really deserves the same level of releases and support as Frost/Stargrave, if you ask me!

Premise of the game is that it's 1875, and Count Dracula used the chaos of the American Civil War to assassinate Lincoln and his entire cabinet, ensorcelling Congress into declaring him president for life. Various supernatural evils have crept in in Dracula's wake, and other forces have arisen to combat the powers of darkness. The rules themselves are perfectly servicable for a solid, non-supernatural western game as well.

The table we played on was absolutely lavish - the game technically calls for a 3' x 3', but we played on a 4' x 4', densely packed with the the town of Shady Pines, Nebraska. I brought my posse, a group of Native Americans with a pair of lycanthropes in their midst (one turning into a bear, and the other a wolf), while Chris, my first opponent, had a warband of voodoo zombies. Our mission was to collect as many loot tokens (out of four available) as possible within the 8-turn limit of the game, with an amusingly interlinked pair of side missions - Chris got extra victory points if my posse leader was killed, and I got extra victory points if his posse leader was alive at the end of the game.

Elva Growing-Thunder darts across the street, past a drunken mountain man.

We also had civilians on the board that could get in the way, become human shields, etc. Late in the game, a complication arose - the locals were sick of us shooting it out, and began unloading their own guns at everyone around!

Ultimately, the game concluded in a draw, though my one shapeshifter did manage to grab a loot token, transform into a wolf, and hightail it away from where all the shooting was taking place.

loot tokens portrayed by fortune cookie-shaped beads!

The second game was between myself and Set, who was also the one hosting the game. We rolled up a mission that saw our respective posse bosses squaring off in the center of town with a pair of underlings close by, and the remainder of our warbands deploying in a corner of the table. He was playing the Dark Confederacy, a group of Confederates who had stolen the secrets of reanimating the dead for their own profit.

My boss immediately transformed into a bear, but didn't have the available movement to charge the mint-julep-slurping necromancer standing across the street. The necromancer summoned a minor eldritch entity (portrayed by a Confederate zombie holding a flag) between himself and the bear.

Unimpressed, the bear mauled the unnatural thing and sent it back to whatever hell it had been whistled up from.

Unfortunately, the second game was all downhill from there for me, with the bear being shot down and the rest of my posse being whittled away one after another - though thankfully, most of them bled out the turn after being shot, which denied Set the victory points for either killing them outright or finishing them off. The win went to my opponent, but it was fairly close, with him ending the game with 4 VP to my 3.

With these being campaign games, there's rolls to make after each game to determine who survived, if there are long-term injuries, and how much money your posse collects between games. Chief Kicking Bird, my posse leader, lost an eye to the Dark Confederacy, and unfortunately one of his followers, Charlie Iron-Knife (the blue-shirted figure in the staredown picture above), died of his injuries and a replacement will need to be recruited.

All in all, I had a great time, and I'm really glad I connected with these guys and was able to meet up with them for a few games. I'm looking forward to continuing this campaign!

Yo Joe!

Casting about my workbench for figures to work on after finishing the Off-Track Betting parlor, I pulled out a mix of converted metal and 3D printed figures for my ongoing GI Joe project which I'd primed some months back. In a Modern gaming state of mind, I was happy to get working on them.

First up, a pair of named characters for the villainous Cobra forces: Croc-Master (in the crocodile-skin vest and boots and gimp mask) and the diabolical Dr. Mindbender (in the purple pants). These are definitely sillier characters that were introduced later in the series' run back in the 1980s; Dr. Mindbender was an orthodontist who accidentally turned himself evil and became a master of robotics and genetics (as one does) while eschewing shirts in the laboratory (but not elaborate metal codpieces held up by suspenders). Croc-Master trains reptiles for aggression on Cobra's behalf, and initially joined the terrorist organization after failing to sell "Trained Security Crocodiles" as an anti-burglary system to Cobra Commander.

I'm making none of this up. And these aren't the silliest characters on Cobra's payroll. These are resin 3D prints of STLs designed by Random Miniatures on Patreon, which my buddy Dave printed out for me a while back. They're a little oversized, but it's less noticeable with these two.

Next up, continuing with Cobra, we have a machine gun team that I converted from a Crooked Dice "Army Heavy Machine Gun" set, using a set of "ASP Trooper" heads also from Crooked Dice.

No ineffectual, children's-television-approved, blue lasers here! Once we get a little sanity in this country and the de minimis exemption on tariffs gets restored, I'm hoping to order and convert a few more of these, because I think it worked out very well.

Finally, two additions to the heroic GI Joe team, though probably not characters whose action figures childen were clamoring for in the 1980s. In green, we have "Tripwire," the Joes' explosives disposal specialist, and next to him "Cutter," who was the Joes' token representative from the US Coast Guard. Tripwire is another Random Miniatures 3D print, while Cutter is again a Crooked Dice figure (one of their "X-Commandos") with a head swap to a mustached head wearing a ball cap. I suspect that the number one factor driving sales of Cutter's action figure in the 1980s was that he was packaged with the "WHALE" Hovercraft, which was one of the more impressive vehicles in the GI Joe motorpool.

You can really see the size difference with the 3D prints here; I'm less worried about it since I don't anticipate Tripwire showing up in a lot of games, but with future prints I'll ask Dave to scale them down slightly.

So what's next? I don't anticipate doing a lot of hobbying this weekend as Monday morning we're getting a new water meter installed as part of a city-wide initiative - and our water meter is right next to my workbench, which means cleaning up and clearing space to ensure the worker(s) from the city can access everything they need to as easily as possible. After that though, I've got eight Crooked Dice "ASP Troopers" to paint up for my GI Joe project; instead of the usual Cobra blues, they'll be wearing the green, gray and yellow of the "Python Patrol" sub-team, just to mix things up a bit and to justify them having a slightly different style of uniform from the rest of my Cobra troopers. I also want to get started on my next terrain build, an "Urgent Care" building my wife got me for my birthday. It has interior rooms, so it'll be a more complex project than some of my other buildings.

More Modern Terrain and Some Early Modern Monsters

I made my way to the print shop tonight after work, and printed our some floors and a sheet of posters I'd made by resizing images off the web, which means this weekend I can make some serious progress on terrain. To begin with, tonight I finished off a piece that's been sitting *mostly* done for a few weeks.

This is a construction office made from a shipping container, produced by Things From The Basement, who I highly recommend checking out if you're in the United States. This is my first kit from them, though I have my eyes on a few more; they use a thinner sheet of MDF than I'm used to from companies like Sarissa or Atomic Laser Cut Designs, but everything was really cleanly cut and fit beautifully. Each side of the shipping container is built up in layers to allow more depth to the detailing.

I sprayed everything but the roof with "Sahara Beige" from Montana Gold spray paints, and did the roof in a flat red paint and primer combo I got at the hardware store. The door was picked out in "Deep Red" from Reaper Miniatures' paint line; I'm not sure why it cracked like that but I think it ended up looking good.

I tried using some Green Stuff World weathering pigments my wife got me as a gift along the bottom of the container, but it just went on like paint and didn't dry to the texture the packaging promised. I tried to salvage it with a heavy drybrushing of tan craft paint, which I think will remain my default method of weathering model buildings.

Inside, I've glued a table stacked with cash and a money-counting machine that I got from Miniature Building Authority; could it be that there's something illicit going on in here? Money laundering? Drug dealing? Or is this just the payroll office for a junkyard or chop shop? I'm really pleased with how perfectly the table fit.

Finally, I added a pinup of Tanya Roberts from her time on the TV show Charlie's Angels; I like having my "Modern" games seem to be a blend of everything over the past 40-odd years, with smart phones, CRT TVs, classic TV shows and the like all appearing side by side. I'm planning to put some old "Joe Camel" cigarette ads on some model billboards in the not too distant future.

In other news...

I'll be returning to Wargames Among the Warplanes for their fall show next month, bringing Devilry Afoot with me; I've planned my gaming around having to paint as few figures between now and the day of the event as possible. I've finished off the last couple figures I wanted to use as monsters in games on that day.

On the left is a Black Dog/Hellhound/Dire Wolf type, intended as Dracula's wolf form, from Crooked Dice's relatively recently released Dracula set of figures, and accompanying it are a pair of animated scarecrows from Crooked Dice's Folk Horror line. These will be appearing as a Barghest and a pair of Bogeymen in the games I'll be running in about 4 weeks' time. All that's left to do for these three is a good coat of varnish, and all that's left to paint for Wargames Among the Warplanes are a pair of Innocents for the Bogeymen to menace.

GI Joe: Mission of Mercy

I got the table cleared off today and set off for another solo game of Fistful of Lead; my first solo game since January, actually - and my first since we'd adopted Poppy, a young, energetic and curious cat. How was this going to go?

I decided to get my GI Joes out for a game, and pulled together a scenario that would let me use some of the generic military terrain that my friend Dave gifted me.

***

A French colony prior to WWII, Kalingaland was wracked by civil war between Soviet-backed rebels and the US-backed federal government until the fall of the USSR. Since then, the anti-democratic Kalinga Rouge rebels have received funding and armaments from the international terrorist organization known as COBRA. The garrison at a remote National Army base has been struck by a virulent new strain of sleeping sickness; the special missions force code-named GI Joe has been dispatched to deliver a cure.

With the future of Kalingaland hanging in the balance, Cobra plots to prevent GI Joe from delivering the vital medication. Can they make it through Cobra's ambush in time?

***

The GI Joe team has to cross the table diagonally to reach the Kalingaland base. The character Lifeline is carrying the medications in his case; if he is put Out of Action before reaching the base, the game immediately ends in failure for the GI Joes. At each barracks (the quonset-style huts), Lifeline can attempt a 5+ Task roll to deliver the medication; success results in a Grunt Group of Kalingaland soldiers being deployed and an activation card for them added to the Joes' hand.

GI Joe Team:

  • Stalker (Leader; Ranger, Impervious, Camouflage) armed with a submachine gun
  • Beachhead (Specialist; Indomitable, Infiltrator) armed with a submachine gun
  • Lady Jaye (Regular; Dodge) armed with a pistol and explosive javelins
  • Lifeline (Regular; Medic) armed with a pistol
  • Airborne (Regular; Nerves of Steel) armed with an automatic rifle.
Cobra Team:

  • Major Bludd (Leader; Deadeye, 9 Lives Tactician) armed with a pistol
  • Storm Shadow (Specialist; Swordsman, Street Fighter) armed with a katana
  • Copperhead (Regular; Brawler) armed with a submachine gun and a knife
  • Cobra Officer (Regular; Slippery) armed with a pistol
  • Cobra Troopers (Grunt Group; Tough as Nails) armed with automatic rifles
Using his "Infiltrator" trait, Beachhead took point, sticking close to a clump of trees and observing Cobra as the Troopers fanned out ahead of the named characters. Airborne moved up along the western river, sticking to the clusters of dense jungle, and took a quick shot at the Cobra Officer, startling him.

Beachhead got the Cobra Troopers in his sights and squeezed the trigger on his submachine gun, intending to catch them all in a hail of burst-fire. Except...click! Rolling a 1, he went Out of Ammo without effect. As the rest of the Joe team moved forward, Lady Jaye hurled an explosive javelin at the clustered Cobra troopers, putting one Out of Action and sending the rest scattering for cover.

Meanwhile, Major Bludd swept forward, shooting Beachhead even as he was clearing the jammed mechanism. Beachhead went down with a Wound. Shrugging off his Shock token, the Cobra Officer charged Lifeline, intent on stopping him from delivering the medicine.

"You can't stop me!" Lifeline yelled, aikido-flipping the Cobra Officer into the jungle mud and sending him Out of Action!

Bypassing the wounded Beachhead, Storm Shadow charged Lady Jaye, putting a Wound on her and sending her to the ground. Airborne opened up with burst fire on Copperhead and a pair of Cobra Troopers, only managing to startle Copperhead; Cobra's Florida Man responded by moving up into range and shooting Airborne in the belly, putting him Out of Action.

Lifeline made it past the fence into the army base, pursued by a pair of Cobra Troopers who opened fire on him; he took a Shock token but managed to dart into the first barracks. Stalker fired on the Troopers, sending them diving for cover, before getting attacked by Storm Shadow.

Unfortunately, that first round of fighting didn't go the way Storm Shadow expected - Stalker won the combat, dealing a Shock token to the ninja. Meanwhile, Beachhead managed to stand up, just in time for Major Bludd to charge him through the woods. Even injured, the Joe was more than a match for Cobra, knocking the Australian mercenary Out of Action! (I had forgotten about Major Bludd's "9 Lives" trait, which would have made a big difference here by converting this Out of Action result into a simple Wound.)

Lady Jaye struggled to her feet and hurled a javelin at Copperhead and some nearby Troopers, only managing to distribute some Shock tokens. Lifeline managed to wake up the first Grunt Group of Kalingaland soldiers, while Storm Shadow managed to get up and Wound Stalker.

Beachhead used burst fire to try and take out Copperhead and one of the remaining Cobra troopers, only succeeding on eliminating the Trooper; Copperhead responded by charging and putting Beachhead Out of Action.

Switching to her pistol, Lady Jaye tried shooting Storm Shadow but rolled a 1, going Out of Ammo. Despite being Wounded, Stalker got back up and Wounded the Cobra ninja. Copperhead shot Lady Jaye in the back, putting her Out of Action, while Storm Shadow used a Ninja technique to feign death (he rolled a "1" on his Wound Recovery roll, going Out of Action).

With the first group of Kalingaland soldiers on their feet and fanning out of the camp, and Lifeline administering medication to the next group, Copperhead and the remaining Cobra trooper decided it was time to withdraw from the battlefield. Until next time...COBRAAAAA!

That was a really good game. I got some figures I hadn't played with before on the table (Stalker, Airborne, Copperhead, the Kalingaland soldiers) and it was a nice first outing for the terrain Dave had gifted me. Plus it was a nice refresher on Fistful of Lead before I go into Wargames Among the Warplanes in two weeks; I haven't had the free time to schedule a game with anyone lately, so I'll probably try to keep the table clear and set up again next week with some of the figures I'm using for that.

And Poppy behaved himself and didn't insert himself into the middle of things, batting figures and terrain around! He jumped up on the table once, went "Nope, don't like this" and jumped right back down.
